Overview
The Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. It allows Australian employers to address labour shortages by bringing in genuinely skilled workers where they cannot find an appropriately skilled Australian.
Streams
There are three streams:
Core Skills Stream
For occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List
Specialist Skills Stream
For highly specialized occupations with specific salary thresholds
Labour Agreement Stream
For workers nominated under a labour agreement
Eligibility Requirements
Nomination:
- You must be nominated by an approved Australian employer
- The position must be genuine and necessary
- Your employer must demonstrate they cannot find a suitable Australian worker
Occupation:
- Your occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list
- You must have the required skills and qualifications
Skills Assessment:
- You may need a skills assessment depending on your occupation
English Language:
- IELTS 5.0 in each component (or equivalent) for Core Skills
- IELTS 6.0 in each component (or equivalent) for Specialist Skills
Work Experience:
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience
Health and Character:
- Meet health and character requirements
Visa Duration
- Core Skills Stream: Up to 4 years
- Specialist Skills Stream: Up to 4 years
- Labour Agreement Stream: As specified in the agreement
Pathway to Permanent Residence
After holding a subclass 482 visa for 3 years, you may be eligible to apply for:
- Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (subclass 494) visa (if in regional area)
